December 13 – January 1

The holiday season is a particularly dangerous time on the roads. Alcohol-impaired driving claimed 10,322 lives last year, an increase of 4.6 percent compared with 2011. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, as many as 900 people could lose their lives in drunk driving crashes nationwide.

That’s why State Highway Safety Offices are working with their state and local law enforcement partners this holiday season to apprehend drunk drivers and remind all drivers to Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. See below for a list of specific state activities.

  • Arizona—Numerous impaired driving deployment activities will occur during the holiday season throughout the state, including sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. Arizona Governors’s Office of Highway Safety Director, Alberto Gutier said “We want everyone to enjoy the Holiday Season, a time for reflection and gratitude, but to do so responsibly by having a designated driver, calling a friend, or taking a taxi home.” The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is reminding drivers of the dangers of drunk driving with the following messages: “Drive Hammered…Get Nailed!” “Get a DD… not a DUI!” “Know Your Limit” “Don’t Drink and Drive.

  • California—The California Office of Traffic Safety has partnered with various law enforcement agencies to deploy not only sobriety checkpoints, but also 39 special multi-agency DUI Task Force Strike Teams, hundreds of local DUI saturation patrols and special warrant/probation sweeps targeting the “worst of the worst” repeat offenders. More than 600 digital freeway message signs remind millions of commuters and holiday travelers to “Report Drunk Drivers – Call 911!” California will be launching a new public awareness effort combining social media promotion, bars, broadcast media and Internet to spotlight designated sober drivers. The new effort, titled DDVIP, begins with a new smartphone web-based app that directs designated drivers to maps showing locations and descriptions of nearby bars that have signed up to be part of a network offering free non-alcoholic drinks and other incentives to designated sober drivers. DD’s are encouraged to review drinks, bars and incentives on various social media including a dedicated DDVIP Facebook, Twitter and Instagram presence.

Please Drive Safe This Holiday Weekend.  Don’t Drink and Drive!
